In WNC Hunting And Shooting Is A Way Of Life To Partake In

Within Macon county there are many outside developed recreation areas for outdoor adventures to partake in including hunting and shooting which are permitted throughout the national forests in WNC in designated areas. According to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, any lands open to the public that allow hunting are called "game lands." Many game animals thrive in the national forests such as deer and bear. For hunting, fishing and trapping licenses the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission offers various types of licenses and permits that differ with regard to the activities they authorize. This site provides information about the licenses and permits available, the privileges they authorize and the associated fees. All licenses are nontransferable, for information about obtaining a license please call (888) 248-6834 Monday - Friday between 8 am and 5 pm.

Deer Season in Western North Carolina is as follows:

Archery - September 10-29 and October 15 to November 17

Muzzleloader - October 1-13

Gun (all weapons) - Novermeber 19 to December 8

Bear Season in Western North Carolina is as follows:

In Surry, Wilkes, Caldwell, Burke, Cleveland and all counties west of them October 15 to November 17 and December 10 to January 1

Moss Knob Shooting Range

The shooting range offers 150-yard range with four firing lanes or stations. Frame targets are set at 25 and 50 yards. There is no fee. A vault toilet is available. For additional information contact the Nantahala Ranger District, 90 Sloan Road, Franklin, NC 28734, (828) 524-6441

Directions: From Highlands/Franklin area turn off Hwy 64 onto Ellijay Road (SR 1001) in Macon County for 9 miles. Turn right on Goodensville Road ( also Forest Service Road 323) and follow signs 2.3 miles. From Cashiers/Cullowhee area turn off Hwy 107 onto Cullowhee Mountain Road for 9 miles. Turn right on Tilley Creek ROad in Jackson County (SR1001) travel 5.5 miles. Turn left on Goodensville ROad (also Forest Service Road 323) and follow signs 2.3 miles.

Dirty Johns Shooting Range

The shooting range offers 100-yard tange with target frames set at 25 yards, 50 yards and 100 yards with six firing lanes or stations. Open year round this is a self service fee area. The fee is $3 per car or a $7 season pass (valid January 1 - Dec 31) is available at the Nantahala District Office. A vault toilet is available. Alcohol is prohibited. Stationary paper targets or manufactured silhouette targets only, no bottles, cans or other breakable targets. Skeet shooting is prohibited. Anyone under the age of 16 must be supervised by an adult. Directions: From Franklin take 64 W for approximately 3 miles, turn right at Wayah Bald/ LBJ Job Corps sign. Turn left on SR 1310 at Loafer's Glory gas station and travel approximately 10 miles. Turn right onto Forest Service Road 711 (It is 1.6 miles past Wayah Bald turnoff). Follow it 1.2 miles to the shooting range turnoff on the right. The range is 3/10 mile.

Obtaining A Conceled Carry Handgun Permit Locally:

Currently, North Carolina's Concealed Carry Handgun Permit is recognized in 32 additional US States. To locally obtain a concealed carrry hundgun permit the fee for the course is $85.00 and for books, handouts and the state certificate its $20.00. There is a written test that you must pass, there are no refunds and there is to be no firearms, ammo or cell phones in the classroom. To receive a permit in North Carolina the following requirements need to be met by the applicant:

  • Must be 21 years of age
  • Be a US Citizen
  • Resident of NC for at lease 30 days
  • No physical or mental infirmity
  • Not under indictment for a felony (no outstanding warrants)
  • No criminal record of conviction of felony
  • No misdemeanor crimes of violence
  • No orders of protection against you
  • Not a user of drugs, alcohol or controlled substances
  • Not lacking mental capacity, not mentally ill
  • If service in Armed Forces has Honorable Discharge
  • No pending criminal charges or trials
  • No DWI's within 3 years
